Ethereum Foundation Unveils Roadmap for Verge Upgrade: Full Statelessness by 2027
The Ethereum Foundation today published the technical specification for "The Verge," the next major Ethereum upgrade targeting full statelessness and 10x reduction in node storage requirements.
ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND, May 19, 2026 — The Ethereum Foundation today published the complete technical specification for "The Verge," the next major upgrade to the Ethereum protocol targeting full statelessness and a 10x reduction in full node storage requirements.
The Verge introduces Verkle trees to replace Ethereum's current Merkle Patricia Trie structure, enabling stateless clients that can verify blocks without downloading or storing the full Ethereum state. This change reduces full node storage requirements from ~2TB to approximately 200GB.
Timeline: EIP specification finalization by Q3 2026, Devnet deployment Q4 2026, mainnet targeting H1 2027. The foundation will host a series of public developer calls to gather community feedback on the specification.
