Ethereum Pectra Upgrade Goes Live: EIP-7702 Enables Smart Account Abstraction
The Ethereum Pectra hard fork successfully activated on mainnet, bringing account abstraction capabilities and improving validator experience across the network.
Ethereum's Pectra hard fork has successfully activated on the mainnet, marking a significant leap forward for user experience and validator operations. The upgrade's centerpiece, EIP-7702, enables externally owned accounts (EOAs) to temporarily behave as smart contracts.
Account Abstraction Arrives
EIP-7702 allows wallets to bundle multiple transactions, pay gas fees in ERC-20 tokens, and enable social recovery mechanisms—all without requiring users to deploy separate smart contract wallets. Wallet providers like MetaMask and Coinbase Wallet have already shipped Pectra-compatible updates.
